Mr Geoff Kirkman, one of our school governors, drew on his vast business acumen, as he delivered an insightful lesson to year 10 GCSE Business students, regarding setting up a business.
Mr Kirkman, who works for the social enterprise, Emerging Futures, in his role as an Enterprise Coach, helps people recovering from substance misuse to make their business ideas become a reality.
His work takes place in Warrington but he has been a governor for 29 years at The Derby and was delighted, having attended The Derby himself, to be involved with supporting the business curriculum.
He outlined the importance of self-employment and gave students a real life business scenario to explore. Getting feedback from the students he carefully gave in depth insights into the practical aspects of making a business be successful.
A step by step business plan was given to students and Mr Kirkman expertly guided them through it. This will be an excellent resource for future lessons.
The students had immensely benefited from hearing about Mr Kirkman’s experience and sound advice.
