What is Citizenship?

There is an on-going program of Careers Education and Guidance (CEG) in Years 10 and 11 in partnership with Connexions. There are two Personal Advisers who offer support and guidance to meet pupils’ needs. CEG was statutory from September 2004 in Years 7-9 and this is part of the Citizenship program. Work shadowing in year 9 supports CEG, as does Work Experience in Year 10. Citizenship GCSE {short course} is offered as an option in Year 11. This consists of 40% coursework, which is a Citizenship activity demonstrating an understanding of personal and social responsibility and 60% examination.

Staff
All Form Tutors at Key Stage 3 teach the PSE / Citizenship curriculum on a rolling program – 1 hour every 2 weeks. The curriculum being followed is extensive, with a variety of lessons and activities, including visitors presentations, which are appropriate for each of the year groups in Key Stage 3.

There is a specialist team of tutors at KS4

The Main Focus of CITIZENSHIP/PSE/PRSE/CEG

The main focus of the PSE/PRSE curriculum is CITIZENSHIP which aims to develop knowledge, skills and understanding and to encourage PARTICIPATION and RESPONSIBLE ACTION as informed citizens. One of the main aims is to enable pupils to make decisions for themselves and to take control of their own lives concerning life choices they will have to face. Citizenship is a statutory National Curriculum foundation subject from Sept. 2002 with assessment and reporting back to parents in all years. CITIZENSHIP/PRSE also delivers the two interdependent aims of the school curriculum:

* Providing opportunities for all pupils to learn and to achieve.
* Encouraging spiritual, moral and cultural development and preparing pupils for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.
