Philosophy

Science and the Arts are not often seen as being comparable areas of study. Science is seen to deal with rational thought, objectivity and acquired knowledge, whilst the Arts are more often connected with feeling, self expression and emotion.

The Renaissance period of Western Europe is recognised as a time of great change, of significant steps forward in thinking and is recognised as having many prominent and inspirational figures. It was not unusual then, for both disciplines to be considered on an equal footing. At that time, many influential people were interested in, and excelled at both. Creativity, which was so evident then, is not just limited to individuals or to specific areas of study. It is not born from undisciplined freedom, nor is it just restricted simply to problem solving. Creativity is imagination brought into reality. It links the knowing of Science with the feeling of the Arts. Science and the Arts can share a common ground, it is perfectly reasonable to have an interest in both, the only difference being how that interest manifests itself.

Science and the Arts have contributed greatly to our way of life and are therefore worthy of study. All pupils in school should have the opportunity to study both as part of a broad and balanced curriculum and in year seven be allowed to experience and participate in a number of activities which demonstrate the common ground shared by each distinct area.

Aims

The Science and Arts Department shares the responsibility for the overall holistic education of the pupil.
These can be thought of as broad aims and would include:

  • Assisting pupils to develop a better understanding of the world in which they live.
  • Helping pupils recognise and solve their own problems.
  • Giving pupils the opportunity to improve their personal relationships.
  • Encouraging pupils to develop their communication skills.
  • Preparing pupils to take a full part in society.
These broad aims are exemplified further by reference to the more specific departmental aims.
The Science and Arts Department has a commitment to pursue the following aims:
  • All pupils are entitled to a broad, balanced education.
  • The content of the curriculum should be part of a coordinated whole school curriculum.
  • All appropriate books, materials and equipment will be provided and student assessment (formative, summative and self-assessment) will be closely monitored.
  • Should they so wish, students will be in a position to pursue continuing and higher education, with a greater appreciation of the context of Science and the Arts.
  • To develop a life-long interest in and enjoyment of both Science and the Arts.
  • To provide a wide range of experiences and to develop skills relevant to all areas of the curriculum.
  • To give an understanding of ideas relevant to pupils’ interests, the environment and future career and leisure needs.

The department is committed to creating, maintaining, reviewing and developing conditions that enable both staff and pupils to achieve effective learning.
