Derby Alumnus Inspires Students During Visit from Boston, USA
Students were inspired by a visit from Derby Grammar School alumnus Peter Nathan, who travelled all the way from Boston, USA to visit friends and family and kindly took the time to stop by.
Peter, who graduated from Derby Grammar School in 1974 as Head Boy, was warmly welcomed back for a tour of the school and to speak with current students. During his visit, he spent time in Science, Art, Geography, and History classes, sharing his experiences and insights. When asked about his visit, Peter said "Students asked some great questions and I was surprised about their age. There is some maturity in that room for sure". Peter was also particaluary impressed with our Changemaker Leadership Programme. "It is a great program and I hope you can continue to have this funded as it surely makes a difference for the students who are able to participate.
Speaking to science students, Peter reflected on his remarkable 35-year career with a leading global biotechnology company in Boston. He offered valuable advice about pursuing scientific careers and the importance of curiosity, resilience and lifelong learning.
After leaving Derby Grammar School, Peter went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, a Master’s in Microbiology, and a PhD in Biochemistry and Genetics. His groundbreaking work has taken him around the world, and even in retirement, he continues to make an impact as an international consultant in the field of biotechnology.
Peter said that "The Derby Grammar was truly a great experience for me and helped set me on a path that has lasted a life time". Peter’s visit was a reminder to our students that the foundations built at The Derby can truly lead to a world of possibilities.
