Headteacher's Weekly Update

Stay connected with everything happening at The Derby High School. Each week, our Headteacher shares a short personal message covering the latest news, highlights, and celebrations from around school.

This Week's Message

This week I delivered Year 11's final formal assembly - their next being The Leavers' Assembly after their GCSE Examinations have ended. In my presentation I talked about finishing the race they started way back in Year 7 (in 2021). I shared the story of Roger Bannister - a long-distance runner and the first man to run the mile in less than four minutes. Noone thought he could do it; they did not believe that the human body could physically go that fast and thought it would collapse under the pressure. Doctors and scientists felt it was an 'Impossible Dream'. Bannister proved them wrong posting 3 minutes 59.4 seconds on the 6th May 1940. In the last 80 years the record has been lowered by almost 17 seconds. The runners have not simply got better – they have begun to believe. Only on Sunday in the London Marathon, we saw two runners complete the arduous 26.2 miles in less than two hours which is a staggering achievement.

Many of our barriers to success come from within us. We create limits for ourselves. But once these barriers are broken, we begin to achieve.
The Year 11 students are well prepared for their exams - I was so impressed with the number of students who came in over the Easter Break to attend revision sessions and complete coursework. They need to keep this going now. Having been in education for nearly twelve years they need to finish the race and record their personal best. They have the potential to do well - it is not an impossible dream. But, as with athletes preparing for a race they need to ensure they are ready. I would expect that they are working hard each school night and at the weekend completing tasks set by teachers and also doing a number of hours revision. We know you will be supporting them to do this.
We are all cheering them on!
