The Derby Round-Up

20th April - 4th May 2026

Message from the Headteacher

Hello all,

Today I want to talk about the importance of our students engaging with our personal development programme - we call this The Derby Diploma. Through the enrichment aspect of The Derby Diploma our students can engage with physical activities, develop a skill or talent or connect with our community (both near and far). Such involvement brings tremendous benefits enhancing social skills, developing character and supporting mental health - it is also known to have a positive impact on performance in examinations. We find that so many of our students grow firm friendships through these opportunities and most importantly brings a sense of belonging to school and everyone has fun.

When young people go to interviews employers are seeking more than academic success. They want to see a well-rounded young person who can communicate with others, work well in a team and demonstrate empathy and understanding for people and the world around them. At The Derby so many agencies we work with comment on the well-rounded, polite and friendly young people we have here and I firmly believe these qualities are developed, to some extent, by our huge and varied opportunities - both in and beyond the school day.

In Year 9 all our students are supported to gain the Duke of Edinburgh Award - a highly respected qualification that builds confidence and resilience - if your child is not involved in the DofE as yet please do get in touch with Mr Pearson, our DofE Lead who will be able to get this started.

Mr Hardicre, Head of Geography, leads our curriculum enrichment and is always willing to consider additions to our offer so please do speak with him if you believe something is missing or you know of an organisation that could come into school and deliver something for our students.

Finally, each week, in Form Time, students are presented with their personal data, including their commitment to enrichment. I would encourage you to both talk about their involvement with The Derby Diploma and the various clubs, trips and events that your child can attend - it will make a difference!

Ms C H Hubert, Headteacher

Proud of our student leaders who showcased their work to Professor Mick Waters and Northwest Comino Consortium Strategic Manager, Pat Walters this week. Professor Waters held the post of Chief Education Officer for the City of Manchester before becoming the Director of Curriculum for England.

Brilliant Club Graduation

Proud of our amazing Year 9 Derby Challenge students who have successfully completed The Brilliant Club Programme.

Their hard work and dedication paid off as they celebrated their achievements at their graduation held at Manchester University - an inspiring milestone and a glimpse into their bright futures ahead.

An inspirational visit from Malcolm Garrett MBE

We had the honour of welcoming Malcolm Garrett MBE into school on Tuesday to talk to Year 8 about his phenomenal career as a graphic designer; from designing album covers for the Buzzcocks and Duran Duran to redesigning the Dublin Bus maps and UK Border force signage. He has certainly had a varied and inspiring career. We look forward to working on future projects with him.

Baller League Kicks Off in the Sunshine

What a week! With the sun shining, our Baller League has been in full swing and the energy on the pitch has been incredible.

Huge congratulations to 7C, who took the title as champions of the Year 7 competition, Miss Leng is absolutely ecstatic that her form came out on top!

Next up, it's the turn of Year 10 to battle it out for the trophy.

An amazing competition all round, a big thank you to Mr Stephenson for organising and bringing it all together.

Votes for 16 Year Olds

Our Student Council representatives had the fantastic opportunity to meet with local MP James Frith to discuss the importance of voting and civic engagement.

They shared thoughtful perspectives and explored the topic of lowering the voting age to 16. We are proud of our student leaders who have the confidence and knowledge to engage in such meaningful discussions about their future.

Homework and Independent Learning

Helping your child to understand how we learn:

Retrieval practice is the strategy of recalling facts, concepts, or events from memory in order to enhance learning. The act of retrieving something from your memory actually strengthens the connections holding it there, making it more likely that you’ll be able to recall it in the future.  Below are some of the strategies that we have spoken to your children about:
