The Derby Round-Up

23rd March - 10th April 2026

Message from the Headteacher

Hello all,

This will be my final message for a few weeks whilst school is closed for the Easter Break.

Today I want to focus on two new initiatives introduced to The Derby this year which we believe have made a difference.

Firstly, the Yondr pouches, brought in to ensure that The Derby is a mobile phone free school, so we are all fully focused on our main purpose - education. Thanks to everyone's support the implementation of this new practice has been seamless. When Bridget Philipson, the Education Secretary, recently visited The Derby students she met were overwhelmingly positive about the impact of our new policy. They were incredibly honest and mature reporting that the pouches had removed the distraction they felt mobile phones bring. As ever we are ahead of government policy as in April Ofsted announced that they now expect all schools to be operating in a mobile phone free environment as we do here at The Derby. Current scientific research is also suggesting that outside of school young people should be mindful of excessive time on their mobile phones to avoid potential physical and mental health issues.

Secondly, I thought I would mention the English Department's introduction of Sparx Reader for our students in Years 7 - 9. This is a digital reading platform designed to improve reading skills and encourage reading for pleasure. There are hundreds of books for students to choose from, and we have found the engagement in this package is increasing week on week as students are becoming more and more competitive, seeking prizes, certificates and a place at the top of the leaderboard. Do ask your child about their engagement with this product. A reminder that Sparx Reader Homework is always due in on Mondays.

I hope you have found these changes to our practice to be beneficial as well.

What’s Been Happening

Year 11 Geography Field Trip Brings Learning to Life

Year 11 Geography students made the most of the glorious weather during their Jurassic Coast study skills trip, an invaluable experience ahead of their GCSE exams. The trip provided a unique opportunity for students to bring their classroom learning to life by studying coastal formations firsthand.

Head of Geography & Lead Practitioner for The Derby Diploma, Mr Hardicre said, “Our aim is to provide an opportunity to experience the UK coastal landscape case study as part of the GCSE Geography and to create a positive approach to revision”.

Throughout the visit, students explored a range of iconic locations, including Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Man o’ War Rocks, Pulpit Rock, the limestone quarries at Portland, and Chesil Beach, Hurst Castle Spit, Studland Bay sand dunes and Old Harry Rocks. These fieldwork experiences deepened the students understanding of coastal processes and landscapes in a real-world setting.

Evenings were spent in focused group study sessions, helping to reinforce key knowledge and exam skills. Despite their busy schedule, students also found time to relax, bond with their peers and create lasting memories together.

On the final day, the group visited a bustling Lyme Regis before beginning their journey home, bringing a rewarding and enriching trip to a close.
“Thank you for organising the Jurassic coast trip. It was a fun experience and I really felt that it truly helped me to understand all the different landforms better after seeing them in real life. I feel like it was a brilliant experience for us all.”

Dance Through The Decades - Primary Dance Festival

Our recent Primary Dance Festival, ‘Dance Through the Decades, was a spectacular showcase of talent, creativity, and teamwork. Five primary schools: Bowness Primary, Prestolee Springsíde, St Peter’s, Tottington Primary took the audience on an exciting journey from the 1920s right through to the present day, with each performance capturing the spirit and style of its era.

The evening was further enhanced by wonderful performances from the Inspire Choir, Derby Concert Band and our multiple dance groups adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the event. Our talented Dance Leaders also played a key role, supporting and encouraging their peers throughout both rehearsals and the final performance.

The event was very well attended and the audience, especially parents and carers were bursting with pride as they watched their young people shine on stage. Students and teachers alike have worked incredibly hard over the past four weeks to rehearse and perfect their routines and their dedication truly paid off in what was a memorable evening for all involved.

Headteacher's Brunch

Our end-of-term celebration was a truly special occasion, bringing together students, staff and families to recognise the achievements of our young people. Parents and carers of award winners were warmly invited into school to share in this proud moment alongside their children and senior staff.

The event was filled with pride and a strong sense of community, as each award recipient explained in their own words, why they had earned their recognition. It was wonderful to hear their reflections as they spoke about their achievements, efforts and progress.

These celebrations are a reminder of the hard work, resilience and talent within our school community. We are incredibly proud of all our students and grateful to the families who joined us to make the occasion even more meaningful.

A Paris & Disneyland Adventure to Remember

From the quiet darkness of a 1:00am departure to the bright lights of Paris and the magic of Disney, this was no ordinary school trip. It was four unforgettable days, packed with adventure and culture.

42 students and five staff set off in the early hours of Friday 20th of March, excitement buzzing as we made our way to Dover. After a smooth crossing the French countryside unfolded before us. Rolling fields, sleepy villages, and the growing anticipation of the days ahead. By afternoon, we arrived at our home for the weekend the charming Château De Grande Romaine, just outside Paris.

The Château was more than just a place to sleep. It was an experience in itself. With bunkbeds sports pitches and even a swimming pool, (which was sadly closed for the season), it quickly became our home from home. The first evening, after a hearty meal, we gathered around campfire leads by PGL staff sharing stories and songs.

Each morning began with continental breakfast and the now famous ‘DIY baguette sandwich’ crafted carefully for the day’s adventures.

Saturday took us straight into the heart of Paris. Our first stop was the iconic Eiffel Tower. Standing high above the city, students took in breathtaking views that stretched for miles. Lunch followed in a nearby park, with the tower watching over us a moment that felt truly Parisian.

Next came a relaxing cruise along the River Seine, drifting past landmarks, including the historic Notre Dame Cathedral. Student enjoyed taking pictures of all of the famous sites from the water.

The afternoon brought even more exploration with a hop-on hop-off tour, stopping at the grand Arc de, Triomphe, and the world-renowned Louvre museum. That evening, back at the Château, the group made delicious French crêpes.

Sunday shifted gears from culture to pure excitement with a full day at Disneyland Paris. From thrilling rollercoasters to colourful parades, souvenir shops to themed restaurants, the park delivered nonstop fun.

Monday morning came too soon. Bags packed and memories made, we began the journey home with one final stop at a French supermarket for last-minute snacks and souvenirs. A slight delay led to a late return arriving back at school at 2:40am on Tuesday 24th of March. Students were exhausted, but full of stories to tell.

In the last week of term, the library transformed into a celebration space, where awards were handed out and each student received a commemorative postcard, soon covered in messages and signatures. This was a lasting reminder of friendships, fun and a trip that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Paris gave us it’s beauty; Disneyland gave us it’s magic, but it was the shared experience that made this trip truly memorable.

A Superb Sporting Partnership

Our BTEC students had an incredible experience visiting Bury Defence Academy this week! They developed new skills, gained hands-on insight & learnt directly from experienced professionals in a supportive and inspiring environment. We’re grateful for this amazing partnership.

Homework and Independent Learning

Helping your child to understand how we learn:

Retrieval practice is the strategy of recalling facts, concepts, or events from memory in order to enhance learning. The act of retrieving something from your memory actually strengthens the connections holding it there, making it more likely that you’ll be able to recall it in the future.  Below are some of the strategies that we have spoken to your children about:
