At The Derby High School, we are fully committed to promoting the fundamental British values as outlined by the Department for Education: Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs. These values are central to our school ethos, curriculum, and wider community life.

1. Democracy

Students are encouraged to participate actively in the democratic process.

We have a student council with form representatives and year group representatives elected by their peers to represent student voice. The Student Council regularly deliver assemblies where they showcase how they have delivered on actions requested by their peers.

• We hold mock elections and debates during key events, such as General Elections.
• Students regularly complete surveys and feedback forms to influence school decisions. 
• Our R-Time curriculum includes units on politics, government and democracy in the UK.

2. The Rule of Law

We consistently reinforce the importance of laws – those that govern the classroom, the school, and the country.

• School rules are clearly communicated, understood and upheld by all.
• We work closely with our School Police Liaison Officer, PC Nadeem, and invite guest speakers (e.g. alumni, police, youth workers) to speak with students deliver workshops, Q and A sessions and presentations.

• The consequences of breaking laws are explored in assemblies, tutor time, and curriculum subjectssuch as History and PSHE.

• Students learn about restorative justice approaches and the concept of fairness.

3. Individual Liberty

• Students are actively encouraged to make independent choices and understand their rights.
• We foster a safe environment where students can express themselves freely and safely.
• Through R/Time, the wider curriculum, assemblies and e-safety lessons students are taught about their freedom of speech, online safety, and personal boundaries.
• A wide range of extra-curricular opportunities through The Derby Diploma Programme empowers students to develop interests and leadership skills.
• Support systems such as Buddies, wellbeing mentors, our senior student team, counselling and safeguarding teams ensure every student feels secure to make informed choices.

4. Mutual Respect

Respect is at the core of everything we do.

• Our 7Rs, behaviour policies, and expectations centre on mutual respect between students, staff, and the wider community.
• We run anti-bullying initiatives, and actively celebrate events such as Anti-Bullying Week and Mental Health Awareness Week.
• Students are encouraged to listen to and value different viewpoints, both in class discussions and in peer interactions.

5. Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

• We promote an inclusive culture where diversity is celebrated.
• Our RE curriculum provides a balanced education on a range of faiths, cultures, and worldviews.
• Our annual Culture Day is a highlight of our school calendar 
• We celebrate cultural and religious festivals such as Ramadan, Diwali, Hanukkah, Easter and Chinese New Year.
• External speakers and visits to places of worship support understanding and dialogue.

International Changemakers Cultural Visit 

• We challenge prejudice and stereotyping through whole-school assemblies and inclusive policies.

Preparing Students for Life in Modern Britain

We believe that embedding British values prepares our students to be respectful, responsible and active citizens in modern Britain. We encourage all members of our school community to model these values in their daily lives and interactions.

Visit to Westminster Palace to discuss the importance of Science in the Primary Curriculum 

Visit to Westminster to learn about the Nolan Principles and participate in a Q&A with local MP James Frith 

Visit to Westminster Hall to receive the Global ‘Inspire’ Award from  Century.
