Enrichment Units

A six-week introduction to the game of chess followed by an in-school Tournament. You will learn the basics of the game – from the names of the pieces to how to play a full match. You will pick up special tips along the way, learn to use a chess clock and notation and understand why chess has been so popular for over 1,400 years!

  • 3pm – 3.55pm for practice and Tournament play

Each lunchtime for Beginners, friendly play and practise. 

Aims of the course
  • To give participants the knowledge to play and enjoy a game of chess.
  • To stage a chess tournament.
Skills you will learn
  • Intellectual and transferable skills such as focus, discipline, concentration, spatial awareness and strategic thinking.
  • Skills to develop cognitive ability: attention, memory, analysis and logic; all fundamental building blocks for personal growth.
  • Social skills that can bring students together and break down barriers, whilst at the same time encouraging a healthy level of competitiveness.
  • Encourages study and preparation as the way to achieve pre-set objectives and for the purpose of individual improvement.
